Gildo Medina. is a visual artist who was born in Mexico City in 1980. For more than 20 years he has lived and worked between Paris, Madrid, Florence, New York and Mexico City.
The diversity of these social landscapes, with different contexts, linguistic and cultural influences, is manifested in the execution of his work, in which he expresses his vision of the present and portrays moments, beliefs, emotions, individuals and societies, as a sensorial record of their own story. As an artist, through his painting, he explores the transition between the banality and the depth of life and manages to transgress the physical support to the conceptual sphere, integrating hidden messages that are unraveled with the complicity of the spectator and perceived from their own reality.
His proposal is critical, confrontational and resists definitions. His visual language is inspired by the complex essence of the human beign. He has and undeniable pictorical quality technique of astonishing realism, which has granted him recognition from different academics around the world. His work is marked by a distinctive mark that reveals it self to this obsessive and sophisticated exploration of beauty, which he questions and reinterprets in each stroke, impregnated with a strong load of sensuality and eroticism.
He has recieved more than thirty awards in different disciplines, and has been published in diverse specialized books by the most prestigious art publishers such as Assouline, Gestalten and Taschen.
The experimentation in formats and materials is not limited in Medina’s conceptual work. He combines contemporary technological resources with the highest pictorial techniques of the old masters, forging his artistic proposal on different supports and techniques that go from “invisible drawings” made with inkless pens on a plain sheet of paper, to more complex works painted on different supports such as cut antique furniture, tree trunks covered in gold leaf, trunks, clothes or on entirely leather canvases; a material that for more than 10 years has become a distinctive feature in his work, standing out for its living nature, its malleability, the sensuality of its textures and the complexity that represents working on this fabric.
He has exhibited his work in different museums, galleries and art fairs around the world such as FIAC, Maison et Objet and the Instituto Cultural de México in Paris, Casa de América in Madrid, Pinta in Miami and London, Design District in Dubai, MACO and Museo de Arte Moderno in Mexico city, among others.
